スイミーの物語を手がかりに、まちにひらく医療空間

本計画は、大阪・堺市に開業した『堺スイミー総合クリニック』の内装計画である。既存ビルのスケルトンから空間を立ち上げる、いわゆるC工事に該当し、周辺環境（コンテクスト）との直接的なつながりを持たない条件下での設計となった。

そこで、クリニック名の由来となっているレオ・レオニ作『スイミー』の物語を手がかりに、空間に対する思考を広げていった。物語に込められた個性・連帯・やさしさといったテーマを空間に重ねることで、地域に開かれた親しみやすい医療空間のあり方を模索している。スイミーは、一匹だけ色の異なる小さな魚である。その個性がまわりとつながる可能性を切り拓いていくように、本計画においても、多数の白い医療室の中に、ひとつだけ雰囲気の異なる空間を挿入した。

内科・外科・美容医療など、診療機能を担う各室は清潔感のある白を基調としており、そこに凹凸のあるベージュ色の空間を差し込むことで、空間にやわらかなリズムと温もりを加えている。この凹凸のある空間は、まるで建築の“背骨”のように全体を貫いており、待合ベンチとなり、本棚となり、診察室への出入口ともなるなど、用途に応じて柔軟にふるまう設計要素である。白とベージュ、均質と個性、機能と親しみといった異なる要素が互いに引き立て合いながら、中心と全体がやわらかくつながる空間がここに立ち上がった。

An Open and Welcoming Clinic Inspired by Swimmy’s Story

This project is the interior design for the Sakai Swimmy General Clinic, recently opened in Sakai City, Osaka.The site involved a C-type construction—a renovation starting from a bare structural shell within an existing building—requiring a design that was independent from the surrounding urban context.

Given these constraints, we turned to the story behind the clinic’s name: Swimmy, written by Leo Lionni.By drawing upon the narrative themes of individuality, collectivity, and gentleness embedded in the story, we sought to create a space that felt open, welcoming, and rooted in the local community.Swimmy, as a character, is a small fish distinguished by its unique color. This individuality allows it to connect with others and lead a collective movement.In a similar manner, the clinic’s layout introduces one spatial element that breaks from the uniformity of the surrounding white clinical rooms—a single space with a distinct atmosphere.

Each medical room, including those for internal medicine, surgery, and aesthetic treatments, is finished in a clean, white tone to support a hygienic and functional environment.Inserted within this white matrix is a beige-colored volume with soft textural variation and depth.This contrasting element introduces a sense of rhythm and warmth, functioning almost like a “spine” running through the entire clinic.The beige volume serves multiple roles: as a waiting bench, a bookshelf, and a gateway to various examination rooms.Its form flexibly responds to different activities and needs throughout the day.

By juxtaposing white and beige, uniformity and character, utility and familiarity, the design fosters a spatial dialogue—creating a setting where center and periphery gently support one another.What emerges is a clinic that balances clarity and comfort, structure and softness—a space where patients and visitors alike can feel at ease, embraced by the quiet story of Swimmy woven into its very form.
