滋賀県大津市の住宅である。
敷地は緩やかな丘にある住宅地で、目線を２階の高さまで上げると琵琶湖を見渡すことができる場所に位置していた。施主は長年滋賀で生活してきたご夫妻であり、琵琶湖を眺めながら暮らす家がコンセプトである。
ユニークな形状、２階リビング、そして広々とした家庭菜園用のオープンスペースが施主の希望であった。そこで、１階は町並みと軸を揃えて、２階は琵琶湖に向けて軸を振ることにした。シンプルな操作でボリュームを斜めに重ねることで、ずれた部分が地上では菜園や物干しの屋根に、２階ではバルコニーとなって生活に溶け込む。
２階の窓辺に琵琶湖を望むちょっとした仕掛けをした。窓は風景と直接つながれるように大きめの引き戸として、ペットの落下防止を兼ねた折りたたみ式のローテーブルを設えた。ちゃぶ台のような高さに設定し、琵琶湖に向かってぼーっとくつろぎながら書き物をしたり、ちょっとコーヒーを置いたりと自然と家族が定着するきっかけをささやかに添えた。構造は木造として、１階と２階の間を少しだけ束で持ち上げている。この束立てがバッファーとなって上下階の角度差を吸収し、造形的にも上下階がかみ込まない。
17世紀から描かれる近江八景のひとつである堅田もほど近い。歌川広重の浮世絵を見れば、女性が床座で琵琶湖を眺めている様子が残っている。時代が変わっても滋賀に根ざして住まう人々の心は変わらない。琵琶湖とその先の三上山が感じられるこの場所らしい住宅を目指した。

This is a house in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture.
The site is a residential area on a gentle hill, and if you look up to the second floor height, you can see Lake Biwa. The owners are a couple who have lived in Shiga for many years, and their concept is a house where you can live while looking out at Lake Biwa.
The client wanted a unique shape, a living room on the second floor, and a spacious open space for a vegetable garden. Therefore, we decided to align the axis of the first floor with the cityscape and the axis of the second floor towards Lake Biwa. By stacking the volumes diagonally with a simple operation, the misaligned parts can be used as a roof for a vegetable garden or drying clothes on the ground, and as a balcony on the second floor, blending into your daily life.
I made a little trick near the window on the second floor to look out at Lake Biwa. The windows are large sliding doors that connect you directly to the scenery, and a foldable low table is installed to prevent pets from falling. It was set at the height of a tea table, where you could relax and write while facing Lake Biwa, or place a cup of coffee on the table, providing a small opportunity for families to naturally settle down. The structure is made of wood, and the space between the first and second floors is slightly raised using bundles. This bundling acts as a buffer and absorbs the difference in angle between the upper and lower floors, and the upper and lower floors do not interfere with the design.
Katata, one of the Eight Views of Omi that has been depicted since the 17th century, is also nearby. If you look at Hiroshige Utagawa's ukiyo-e prints, you can see a woman sitting on the floor looking out at Lake Biwa. Even if times change, the hearts of the people who live in Shiga remain the same. We aimed for a home that would be typical of this location, where you could feel Lake Biwa and Mt. Mikami beyond.
