窓辺の家
滋賀県高島市。比良山系を背にしたこの土地には、かつての豪雪に備えた合掌屋根と、それを取り巻く「下屋」を備えた古民家が点在している。地域に根差したこの建築形式は、風景の一部となっている。しかし近年、この地における積雪量は減少し、暮らしに求められる空間のあり方もまた変化しつつある。
私たちは、空き家となっていた一棟の古民家を、季節ごとに民泊や別荘として運営・活用するプロジェクトとして改修した。焦点を当てたのは、かつて「雪囲い」によって閉ざされていた下屋空間である。積雪量の調査と住民へのヒアリングから、この地域では雪囲いを撤去する動きが進んでいることがわかった。そこで私たちは、閉じられていた下屋を風景へと開き、地域環境と暮らしが呼応する「居場所」へと再構成することを試みた。
下屋には、緑と光を取り込む窓辺の白い部屋を挿入した。座ったり、寝そべったり、思い思いに過ごせる場所。ほんのり白く染めた地域産の木材が、石庭のように柔らかな光を奥へと導き、漆黒の古色と対比をなす。その景色は、新しいようでどこか懐かしく、時間の重なりを感じさせる。
中央の和室は、雑壁を取り払い、ひとつながりの広間へと再編。可動する「箪笥の間仕切り」を導入することで、既存の歪みを受け止めながらも自由なゾーニングを可能にしている。断熱補強と床暖房の導入によって、冬の暮らしも快適に整えた。離れに残された蔵には、三つの正方形の開口のみを設け、最小限の操作で光を呼び込んでいる。
風土に根ざした建築を、現代の暮らしに対して再び「開く」ための試みである。
ここで生まれる新たなふるまいが、地域の風景と時間に新たな層を加えていくことを願っている。

A House by the Window
Reopening the Geya to the Landscape
Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture. Nestled at the foot of the Hira Mountains, this area is home to traditional kominkahouses featuring steep gassho-style roofs and a surrounding lower-eaved structure known as geya. Once a strategy to endure heavy snowfall, this architectural form has become an inseparable part of the local landscape. In recent years, however, the amount of snowfall in the region has declined, and the spatial demands of everyday life have begun to shift accordingly.
In this project, we renovated a long-abandoned kominka to serve as a seasonal guesthouse and second home. Our focus was the geya—a space once enclosed by yukigakoi, or snow barriers. Through snowfall data analysis and interviews with local residents, we learned that the removal of snow barriers is becoming increasingly common in the area. This discovery prompted us to transform the closed-off geya into an open threshold—a living space that reconnects daily life with the surrounding landscape.
We inserted a white room along the window edge of the geya, allowing light and greenery to filter in. It is a place where one can sit, lie down, and linger freely. Locally sourced wood, lightly tinted white, guides soft natural light into the depths of the house like a dry garden, creating a quiet contrast with the dark, weathered timber of the original structure. The result is a scene that feels both fresh and familiar—an impression of layered time.
The central tatami rooms were stripped of their internal walls and reconfigured into a continuous open space. To allow for flexible zoning, we introduced movable tansu-style partitions that accommodate the existing distortions of the building while maintaining spatial fluidity. With improved insulation and underfloor heating, the home now supports a comfortable winter lifestyle. In the detached storehouse (kura), we created three square openings—simple yet effective interventions that softly welcome in daylight.
This project is a quiet attempt to reopen architecture rooted in local climate to the conditions of contemporary life. We hope that the new behaviors fostered here will add another layer to the evolving dialogue between people, landscape, and time.
