京都大学附属図書館 ラーニングコモンズ
（北村+太田のデザインユニット「OKAAA」でのプロジェクトの紹介）
京都大学附属図書館の中にラーニングコモンズを整備するプロジェクトである。本プロジェクトは、図書館職員、教員、学生、設計者によるコラボレーションによって実現した。所属や専門領域の異なるメンバーが集まり、「新しいラーニングコモンズ」という一つのテーマについて対話を重ね、実現に向けて継続的な打合せを行った。そのプロセス自体が、学生の自主性や創造性を期待するラーニングコモンズのあり方を体現しており、計画を前に進める大きな推進力となった。空間デザインのコンセプトは、ラーニングコモンズに求められる機能、すなわち従来の「一人で静かに学ぶ」図書館像とは異なる、「多人数で対話しながら学ぶ」能動的な学習を促すことである。設計にあたっては、当初は支障になると懸念されていた既存の四本の柱を積極的に活用し、既存の書棚と調和するよう、均質な図書館空間の中に柔らかな曲線の造作を挿入した。これにより、新旧の書棚が互いに緊張感を保ちながら共存する状態を目指している。この曲線の造作は、大学キャンパスのシンボルツリーであるクスノキのように、人が自然と集まる中心となることを意図した。天井からの照明によって柔らかな陰影が生まれ、光の揺らぎを感じられる、心地よい学習空間をつくり出している。
Learning Commons, Kyoto University Library
This project creates a learning commons within the Kyoto University Library. It was realized through close collaboration among library staff, faculty members, students, and the design team. Participants from different affiliations and fields came together to discuss a single theme—“a new learning commons”—and advanced the project through repeated dialogue and coordination. This collaborative process itself embodied the ethos of the learning commons, which values students’ autonomy and creativity, and became a driving force in bringing the project to fruition. The spatial design concept responds to the functions required of a learning commons: unlike the traditional library model of quiet, individual study, the space is intended to encourage active learning through dialogue among multiple users. Elements initially considered obstacles—four existing columns—were instead reinterpreted as assets, and gentle curved forms were inserted into the otherwise uniform library environment in harmony with the existing bookshelves. Through this approach, the project seeks a state in which new and old shelving coexist in a productive tension. The curved installation was conceived as a gathering point, much like the camphor tree that serves as a symbolic presence on the university campus, naturally drawing people together. Illuminated by overhead lighting, the space is animated by soft shadows and subtle variations of light, creating a comfortable and inviting environment for learning.
