滋賀県大津市に建つ住宅である。敷地は緩やかな丘に広がる住宅地にあり、視線を二階の高さまで上げると琵琶湖を見渡すことができる。施主は長年滋賀で暮らしてきたご夫妻であり、本計画は、琵琶湖を眺めながら日々を過ごす住まいである。ユニークな形状、眺望の良い二階リビング、そして広々とした家庭菜園用のオープンスペースが施主の要望であった。そこで、一階は周囲の町並みと軸を揃え、二階は琵琶湖に向けて軸を振る構成とした。シンプルな操作としてボリュームを斜めに重ねることで、ずれによって生まれた部分が、一階では菜園や物干しのための屋根となり、二階ではバルコニーとして生活に溶け込んでいる。二階の窓辺には、琵琶湖を望むためのささやかな仕掛けを施した。風景と直接つながるよう窓は大きめの引き戸とし、窓辺に折りたたみ式のローテーブルを設けている。ちゃぶ台のような高さのテーブルは、琵琶湖に向かってくつろぎながら書き物をしたり、コーヒーを置いたりと、家族が自然と腰を落ち着けるきっかけを生み出している。構造は木造とし、一階と二階のあいだをわずかに束で持ち上げることで、上下階の角度差を吸収している。この束立てはバッファーとして機能し、造形的にも上下階のボリュームが噛み合いすぎない関係をつくり出している。周辺には、十七世紀から描かれてきた近江八景のひとつである石山もほど近い。歌川広重の浮世絵には、床座で琵琶湖を眺める人物の姿が描かれている。時代が移り変わっても、滋賀に根ざして暮らす人々の心は変わらない。琵琶湖と、その先に連なる三上山の気配を感じながら、この場所らしい住まいを目指した。

This is a residential project located in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. The site sits within a residential area on a gentle hill, from which Lake Biwa can be seen when the viewpoint rises to the height of the second floor. The clients are a couple who have lived in Shiga for many years, and the house is conceived as a place to live while looking out over Lake Biwa. Their requests included a distinctive form, a second-floor living room with good views, and a generous open space for a home vegetable garden. In response, the first floor is aligned with the surrounding streetscape, while the second floor is rotated toward Lake Biwa. Through the simple operation of stacking volumes at an angle, the shifted portions are absorbed into daily life, becoming a roof for the garden and laundry area on the ground level and a balcony on the second floor. At the window on the second floor, a small device was introduced to enhance the experience of viewing the lake. Large sliding doors create a direct connection to the landscape, and a foldable low table was designed that also serves as a guard to prevent pets from falling. Set at a height reminiscent of a traditional low table, it offers a place to write, set down a cup of coffee, or simply relax while gazing out over Lake Biwa, quietly encouraging family members to settle there. The structure is timber, with the space between the first and second floors slightly lifted on posts. These posts act as a buffer, absorbing the difference in angles between the two levels and preventing the volumes from interlocking too tightly in formal terms. Nearby lies Ishiyama, one of the Eight Views of Omi depicted since the seventeenth century. In ukiyo-e prints by Utagawa Hiroshige, figures are shown seated on the floor while gazing out at Lake Biwa. Though times change, the sensibilities of those who live rooted in Shiga remain constant. This project seeks a form of dwelling suited to this place, where Lake Biwa and the presence of Mount Mikami beyond can be quietly felt.
